Sheila E. on Recording “Venus De Milo” with Prince

“Released 40 years ago today – March 31, 1986 – Prince’s PARADE album.

I played drums on I believe one of the most amazing and saddest songs Prince ever wrote, “Venus De Milo”.

To this day when I hear this song, it brings back, not only being in the studio to record this, but what thoughts might have been running through his mind to write such an incredible song. It has a depth of sadness to it.

Prince also credited every musician, including all of the orchestra, and gave profuse thanks to Clare Fischer for his contributions. Clare Fischer brought life, I heard about the process in which he was able to understand each part that was contributed to the song in such a way that the strings would not be in the way. Genius! Prince and Clare, the incredible duet we never knew we needed. This combination changed our lives … “
